Cristina Korres

The work of the artist and fashion designer Cristina Korres, like the furniture collection designed by Francesc Rifé Studio for Alexandra Forwards, is sculptural, delicate, and largely sensory. The new installation for RI HOUSE, titled ‘Touch. Reveal.,’ is woven from a creative exchange between them and will be open for visitation from March 13th to May 31st. This project celebrates touch and advocates for traditional craftsmanship in manufacturing processes.

WHEN DID YOUR ROMANCE WITH FABRICS BEGIN?

I have always had a certain sensitivity to fabric, especially to the touch. I have a predisposition, whenever I see a fabric, to touch it; feeling the texture of materials conveys something to me it’s essentially a matter of skin. I have always been very interested in the textile process because I see a very romantic aspect to it. It’s made with machines, but under a process where hands play a significant role, and I have always paid close attention to people’s hands.

HOW IS YOUR MANUFACTURING PROCESS?

It’s more artisanal than mechanized. I tend to lean towards the artisanal side, towards anything that has a soul and a person behind it whom I know.

WHAT DOES A COLLABORATIVE PROJECT NEED TO HAVE TO CAPTIVATE YOU?

First, the aesthetics has to be an aesthetic with which I feel comfortable, just like with the person I collaborate with. For example, in this collaboration, the pieces from Alexandra Forwards resonate with me; I appreciate their design and the work of the person behind them.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FIRST INSTALLATION,  ‘TOUCH. REVEAL,’ FOR RI HOUSE.

Ultimately, the installation speaks to how culture hangs by a thread, a fabric, a weave. Culture gives us life, air, oxygen to society. Even if it seems like it doesn’t reach people, it does because change comes from culture. Otherwise, I don’t have a preformed idea of what I want to convey. I simply create things that I like and hope that someone connects with them in the same way they resonate with me. I aim to share what I do with sensitivities similar to mine, my tribe, without targeting clients or seeking approval . I don’t need to be liked.

TO CREATE, IT’S CRUCIAL TO OBSERVE, AND LISTEN – WHAT INSPIRES YOU FROM YOUR SURROUNDINGS?

It’s very abstract ideas, geometries, perceptions, people, moments, needs. I work with the disproportion of proportion. When I alter the proportions, it changes the meaning of things for me. Perhaps, when I’m feeling a bit dry, my source of inspiration is art in all its forms: painting, music, and more.

WHAT DOES YOUR SPACE SOUND LIKE AND WHAT IS IT LIKE?

It has art, space, light, and sounds like classical music: Bach, Mahler, Beethoven. Although Beethoven exhilarates me, when I listen to him, I have to stop whatever I’m doing.

WITH TIME, HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR EVOLUTION AS A CREATIVE?

I would like to stop following the vital times of fashion and dedicate myself to personal projects, like my collection of handbags, for example. To be freer than I am now. When you collaborate with a brand, you work on a theme, whereas art is a personal expression, the artist’s perception. I also appreciate collaborations with companies, but I’m less inclined towards them.
